In my coach training, my mentor introduced the concept of HURA to our class and I love it so much, I incorporate it in all of my discussions about effective communication. He refers to it as Verbal Aikido. 


Rather than just reacting, it’s helpful to redirect the negative energy so it doesn’t impact the conversation and, instead, focus on ensuring 

1. they feel HURA and then 2. it’s your turn!


This small shift in focus allows you to stay (or quickly return) to rational thinking and problem solving!

 Sometimes we - or the people we’re speaking with - hear “suggestions” and offers of “advice” as criticism.


Have you ever seen or experienced this? What was the reaction?

Not good, right?


How about, instead, you frame the advice in the form of a question to let them consider it without pressure or expectation?


Instead of:

Try something like: 

  • How much value would you like to put to what they say/think? or
  • What would it be like if you value your opinion more than theirs?


When you ask instead of tell, you trigger their rational brain which helps avoid the big feeling reactions.

As an assistant manager of a bank branch, I used to have all of the tellers come to me for authorization to release funds on large cheque deposits. It could be time consuming for me to bring up the client and perform a series of checks to determine eligibility for release. It was taking up a lot of my time.

Finally, I realized that I could save time while also empowering my team by teaching them how to perform the investigation themselves. 


How else could it benefit the company? Good question. 

Here’s some of the reasons: 

  • saving time because they were already in the client’s profile
  • demonstrating trust in them; building their confidence
  • teaching them the thought process to making these decisions
  • building their skillset towards future promotions

Empowering my team ended up being a gift to their confidence and abilities within the organization.

When you think of the old school ways of how leaders (bosses, parents, teachers, etc.) used to be, what comes to mind?


I remember when we were treated like minions.


Those in power were expected to control their people.


It was all about forcing people to doing what they were told.


Leadership isn't - or shouldn't be - like that anymore!


Now that we know better.


Effective leadership is about stepping back  to recognize each person's superpower and then helping them shine!

I'm going to get vulnerable for a minute. I want you to understand where I've come from; where I am now; and why coaching means so much to me.


There was a time when I measured my worth by how much I could give to others.
I wore a constant smile, offered endless kindness, and did everything I could to make people happy — even when it meant sacrificing my own peace. 


Inside, though, I was exhausted, lost, and disconnected from myself.

I had convinced myself that to love meant to sacrifice. That being strong meant pretending I was fine. That if I just gave enough, maybe I’d finally feel like enough.


But the truth was, I was struggling — deeply. I didn’t believe I was worthy of love or respect. I feared both failure and success. And I hid behind a mask every day, terrified someone would see how broken I felt inside.


I tried therapy, but it didn’t feel right for me. Talking about my pain without action left me feeling stuck. What I craved was change— something that could move me forward, not keep me anchored in what hurt.


Then I met my first coach.
And everything shifted.


Coaching helped me take action, take ownership, and take my power back. It gave me the tools to rebuild my confidence, set boundaries, and learn that authenticity isn’t weakness — it’s freedom. For the first time, I began living from a place of truth, not fear.
